Pacific Anti-Corruption Updates (9 May 2020)

Preventing Corruption, A Priority During COVID-19 Adopting comprehensive auditing, oversight, accountability and reporting mechanisms to monitor the disbursement process is one of the key recommendations to prevent corruption in the Pacific during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, according to a new advisory note from the United Nations Pacific Regional Anti-Corruption (UN-PRAC) Project. 

 

  

 

PNG:  

TIPNG calls for Transparency of COVID-19 Funds Transparency International PNG (TIPNG) is demanding greater accountability and proper detailed disclosure of financials from the Government and Leaders, as allegations of financial impropriety relating to use of funds allocated to the Covid-19 State of Emergency (SOE) response. 

 

  

 

Missing PNG APEC fleet found but not sold It defended their purchase by claiming the private sector had committed to buying the cars, a claim questioned by anti-corruption watchdog Transparency international. 

  

 

FIJI:  

  

FICAC: Working Efficiently to prevent corruption in times of global crisis The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has been vigilant in protecting consumers and businesses from restrictive practices, and in controlling prices of regulated industries. 

  

 


SOLOMON ISLANDS:  

World Bank Approves USD$15 Million to Assist Solomon Islands The operation will also support Solomon Islands’ businesses through promoting the establishment of a national independent commission against corruption. 

 

  

  

TONGA:  

Tonga needs to grow private sector to resolve fiscal challenges There is also scope to improve governance, particularly regarding regulatory quality and enforcement, government effectiveness, and control of corruption.
